Explore Historic Hermann, MO
A visit to Hermann is one of the most popular things to do in Missouri. Hermann is a fun tourist destination located in mid-Missouri on the banks of the Missouri River. It has a rich history dating back to 1837 when the land was purchased by the German Settlement Society in Philadelphia with the goal of establishing a community to preserve their German traditions and culture. The first settlers arrived in 1838 and were surprised to find the steep, rocky hillsides. Being industrious and hardworking they decided the best use of the land was vineyards. Just 10 years later they held their first Weinfest! By the early 1900’s there were 66 Wineries operating in and around Hermann. The successes of the vintners came to an end in 1919 with the enactment of Prohibition. It was not until the 1960’s that the wine industry returned. Today seven wineries operate in the area and is one of the reasons tourists travel to Hermann.
Hermann still retains its Old World charm. A five-block area is designated as a national historic district with several properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town’s German Heritage is evident and is celebrated annually every May and October with Maifest and Oktoberfest. In addition to visiting the wineries and the Hermann Wurst Haus there are other fun things to do in Missouri in and near Hermann. Here are a few ideas.
